“Myths are nothing more than society’s way of forcing poor males to do things they don’t want to do in exchange for a transcendence that does not exist.”
“He wanted to kiss her, to place her atop his shoulder and run away with her, to spread her on a table and devour her…”
I devoured the first two books in The Winemakers series, so was overjoyed when the author asked if I wanted to ARC read this delectable tale of love and lust. This series has quickly become my new favorite in the historical romance genre, and I will recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Once again, we are swept away to 19th-century Portugal, this time following a princess of piety and a rake whose religion is science. Isabel is a sheltered princess with a great ambition to create a better world for women. Henrique is a noble who has turned to science, wanting to rid the world of illness. The both of them together make an unstoppable force. But their moral differences cause them to argue and judge each other.
But the tension…oh my goodness…the tension is a spice of its own. I adored the way that Henrique labored to break down the rigid walls Isabel had built around herself and how those same walls came tumbling down for him as well. Both of them displayed an uncharacteristic change in their beliefs as they were exposed to new truths, awakening into the people they were destined to be.
The author’s storytelling is unique and captivating. Though this is the spiciest book of the series, the real steam doesn’t happen until the end. But throughout the book, we get these delicious tastes of spice. The way the author illustrates the attraction between Henrique and Isabel is just brilliant. The flower scene…oh my goodness.
I love this book and cannot wait to re-read every book in the series.
