“Talk about a clam jam.”
“I’ve learnt that you don’t stop loving someone just because you’re not together. Just like you don’t stop loving your first child because you have a second. The love just keeps coming.”
“My rainbow on rainy days. My star on dark nights and my sun on wintry mornings.”
This series is a whirlwind of emotion. Agonizing. Heartbreaking. Aggravating. But I loved it. It gave me The Notebook vibes. These two people love each other so much, their love is consuming, but they can’t seem to find the right time and place to be together. They argue constantly. God did I want to slap some sense into them.
Cal and Steph have known each other since the young age of 5. After decades of friendship, something more grows between them. Their long history plays a big part in their loyalty to each other, but romantic relationships can get messy and destroy the strongest friendships. And that’s what happened to Cal and Steph.
I read this series in chronological order, which I highly recommend. I needed to get the backstory, see their friendship evolve before diving into book 1. Without it, I’m not sure I would have been rooting for Cal and Steph. I don’t usually read romances about cheating. But this one was different. I wanted nothing more than to see Cal and Steph get a happy ending. And they do get there, but their journey is long and grueling.
What I love most about this series is how it shows a woman living an unhealthy stable life. Sure, she’s got a “great” husband who cooks and who is a wonderful dad. But happiness comes in many shapes and sizes. It took seeing Cal again for Steph to realize just how unhappy she really was. Life was in default mode.
If this story taught me anything it’s that you shouldn’t settle for something less than what you want and what you deserve. Don’t let 20 years go by before you realize the life you are living is not the one you want. Don’t walk away from someone you love because you are scared. Keep hold of that love. Stay true to yourself. And live.
