โThings matter to me more than they do to normal people, I thought. I need to relax and let things go. I should experiment with drugs.โ
Sally Rooney has quickly become one of my favorite authors. ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ was my first book of hers, and I remember being shocked by her unique writing style. No quotation marks around dialogue? What!! But I got over it fast and fell in love. The dialogue is casual, like a friend telling you about their day. Her characters are always the same, but I love the type castingโintelligent people who donโt know what to do with life and how to handle love.
This book, like her others, circles around the themes of depression and anxiety. Frances is a young college student who writes poetry. With no money, an alcoholic dad, and an unsympathetic mom, her life becomes even heavier when she begins to develop feelings for a married man.
Now, I hate cheating. I donโt like love stories about cheating. But this story had me hooked and deeply involved in Francesโ story. I found myself routing for these two. And the more Nick revealed about himself and his relationship with his wife, the more I loved him and wanted him to find happiness with Frances.
So far, the three books Iโve read by Sally Rooney have all been 5 stars for me. I canโt wait to read everything she has ever written and let all the misery and emotional distress consume me.
